The weekend produced two very different series for New York baseball: the Yankees escaped Toronto with a dramatic extra-inning win after dropping the first two games, while the Mets swept Washington at Citi Field and continued their post-trade-deadline surge.

🔵 YANKEES: Rice Saves the Weekend in Toronto

The Yankees entered Sunday in serious danger of being swept after losing 3-1 Friday and 4-1 Saturday to Toronto. Friday's loss featured another strong Gerrit Cole outing that New York couldn't turn into a victory, while Charles McAdoo's go-ahead seventh-inning double helped Toronto take Saturday's game. Sunday changed the mood. Ben Rice launched the tiebreaking home run in the 10th inning, lifting New York to a 4-3 victory and preventing a three-game sweep.

The larger concern remains offense. New York scored only six runs over the entire three-game series, and four came Sunday.

Sunday's win was important, but it shouldn't disguise what happened Friday and Saturday. The Yankees received quality pitching and still struggled to generate offense. That becomes dangerous in October, when elite pitching makes runs even harder to manufacture. Rice's home run prevented this from becoming a disastrous weekend. Now New York needs to turn Sunday's emotional victory into something bigger. There's also a personnel storyline to watch: Cody Bellinger's return remains pending. Aaron Boone clarified Sunday that Bellinger will undergo more workouts before beginning a rehab assignment later this week; Boone said there has been no setback with his strained left hamstring.

🟠 METS: SWEEP AT CITI FIELD

Meanwhile, the Mets couldn't have asked for much more.

Three games. Three wins.

Friday began with a 4-1 victory, powered by home runs from Francisco Lindor and Jared Young. Saturday produced the weekend's most dramatic moment. The Mets entered the ninth trailing Washington before Francisco Alvarez tied the game and Lindor delivered the walk-off RBI single for a 5-4 victory.  Then Sunday completed the sweep. Christian Scott pitched into the seventh inning for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery, while Luis Torrens hit a two-run homer in a 4-3 Mets victory.

This is becoming more than one good series. The Mets entered Saturday 8-3 since the trade deadline and then won both remaining games of the weekend. What should encourage Mets fans most is how they're winning. Friday brought power.

Saturday required a ninth-inning comeback. Sunday brought strong starting pitching and enough offense to finish the sweep. That's the profile of a club beginning to find multiple ways to win. Christian Scott's performance may be especially significant. A healthy Scott capable of working deep into games could effectively become another late-season addition to the pitching staff.
